"Preserving Indiana's Natural Heritage through Plant Conservation"
A state botanist wears a lot of hats and is perpetually involved in numerous conservation and research initiatives. Indiana's State Botanist, Scott Namestnik, will tell us about his role at the Indiana Natural Heritage Data Center, part of the Indiana Department of Natural Resources - Division of Fish, Wildlife & Nature Preserves, and will describe some of the projects he is currently working on to better understand the flora of Indiana and to conserve rare plant species across the state through collaboration and partnerships. Scott will also provide reasons for why it is important for us to use native plants in our landscaping and why it is important to protect natural areas, especially wetlands. We have also asked Scott to share some of his favorite native plants with us, but be prepared... a botanist, like a parent more than one child, has a difficult time choosing favorites!
